Hazen Recognizes Players
Coming off an 11-3-5 season, the Hazen Girls Soccer program celebrated tonight at the yearend awards banquet. “This is always a great event, but it is bittersweet because you say goodbye to soccer players and parents who you’ve gotten to know very well,” said Coach Ken Matthews.
This year’s award banquet was also an emotional one for Matthews and the program. “We lost two of our family members this year. First Joe and then Lora,” said Matthews. Matthews was referring to long time Hazen custodian and super fan Joe Dahl and Lora Michaud, long time supporter and mother of a current and a former Hazen player.
The Hazen players have worn J and LM on their hands during games this year to honor the pair and to remind them what is important – not just the result of the game but how they play it, their sportsmanship on the field and relying on their teammates when the going got tough.
The JV Coaches Awards:
Most Improved – Kianne Littleton
Most Inspirational – Stephanie Myers
Impact Player – Brook Swenson
Player of the Year – Emma Lorrigan
Winners of the Hazen High School Ideals Award:
Pride – Sarah Schoville
Unity – Kendall Michaud
Achievement – Priscilla Yu
Tonight, Matthews and Coach Bre Vanden Bos announced that the team award for the most inspirational player would be permanently named for Lora Michaud. “Lora was one of our inspirations this year. Hazen Soccer was a big part of her life over the years. She dared us to be great with her saying - Give it everything you’ve got and dig down deeper and give it some more,” said Matthews. “That’s something we’ll take along with us in the seasons to come.”
Player Voted Team Awards:
Most Improved – Chelsea Delgado
The Lora Michaud Most Inspirational Player – Kendall Michaud
Most Valuable Player – Dee Dee Green
The Mark F. Garvin Award for Academic Excellence went to Priscilla Yu. A Senior, Keeper, and Captain, Yu has a cumulative 3.98 GPA. This year she's taking four AP classes, is the ASB Secretary and was in charge of the Homecoming Dance planning. Dr. Muckerheide reports Priscilla is one of the top 5 math students in the state of Washington and she is also a state finalist for the High School Heisman.
Coaches Awards
The Joe Dahl Teammate of the Year – Kathleen Lucier
Quoting Gray Schaplow of Hazen, “Joe Dahl was the ultimate team player. He constantly went out of his way to help others. In all the time I knew him I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone.”
“Joe was my go to guy after our great games and less than great games. He was the person I knew would have the right words to make it all right. Kathleen matches all that so well she is our first annual Joe Dahl Teammate of the Year Award winner.” Matthews said.
Impact Player of the Year – Dee Dee Green
“When we go through the process of picking our Impact Player of the Year, Bre and I start with players who change the dynamic of our game. We had several candidates but one this year stood out. Yes, she’s a very good soccer player, but she has raised the level of our play this year and become an asset to our program. That ultimately defines impact in our minds,” said Matthews.
Highlander of the Year – Sarah Schoville
“Players ask me all the time what it takes to be Highlander of the Year. I’m not really good at explaining that. But, maybe after three years, I have it figured out. If you took all the awards we handed out this year from academics to improvement to inspirational to teammate to impact and added them together and somehow divided it by being a warrior – you’d get this year’s winner,” said Matthews.
Also announced tonight was the Hazen Girls Soccer Booster Club College Scholarship. This scholarship will be open annually to all senior girl soccer players at Hazen. Applications will be taken and the scholarship will be awarded by the Booster Club. “I can’t thank our parent board enough for putting this together – I’ve dreamed about having a scholarship award for seven years. This group has done it. My hat is off to them,” Matthews finished.

Press Release – November 6, 2011 - For immediate release
Late Goal Dooms Hazen
Kelso scored a goal with 49 seconds left in the game to end Hazen’s season 2-1 yesterday. As advertised, the match featured a physical team, Kelso, versus a finesse team, Hazen. Physical won the day.
“Wednesday against Auburn Mountainview we held off the physical play by passing and running around them. Today, we looked dangerous when we did that; we just weren’t able to do it enough,” said Coach Ken Matthews.
Hazen ended their season 11-3-5 and 7-0-4 in league. Two of the losses and three of the draws came on late goals. “That’s something we’ve got to figure out before next year,” Matthews said.
Matthews and Coach Breann Vanden Bos have already started the planning process. The Highlanders graduate six seniors, three who started and four who made this year’s all league team.
“We’ve coached these seniors for three years, and I mean years not seasons. They are a great group and they all excel in many areas on and off the field. Their leadership of and contribution to this team will never be overlooked,” Matthews said. “You know you’re going to miss a group of seniors when the planning for next year starts and you think, well wouldn’t it be nice if we had her for one more year. That’s how I feel about these six players.”
Hazen’s roster is hardly empty. Matthews and Vanden Bos have thirteen returning players including eight who made all league teams this year. Additionally, six JV players were called up for the playoff squad. Matthews has heard there are several 8th grade players in the pipeline he and Vanden Bos want to start watching in their club team games.
“As a high school coach, you get to work with students for four years and then they’re gone. They become so important to the makeup of the team. One of my favorite quotes is from a small college coach in Minnesota. It basically goes something like this – Every year we lose irreplaceable players and every year more irreplaceable guys show up. I think that captures where our soccer program is right now,” Matthews concluded.
Last up for the Highlanders is the November 15, Awards Banquet. The event will be held at the Hazen Cafeteria at 6:00 PM.

Hazen Captures District Championship
For a game where both teams were guaranteed a seed into the SW Washington Bi-District Playoff Games, neither team gave an inch. It took two halves, two overtime periods, and six penalty kicks before a winner could be decided.
Auburn Mountainview and Hazen ended the regulation part of the game 0-0. After neither team could find the net during the golden goal period, it was time for the match to be decided on penalty kicks.
In the first round of five shooters, Gabby Brower, Tyra Markey and Courtney Kiteley all made their shots. Mountainview also scored on three of their shots. Next up was sudden death penalties. Hazen’s first shooter, Marina Vaughn made her shot. The Mountainview player bounced her shot off the post. After that, Hazen was celebrating.
“This was a big win for the girls to get. Either way it ended we were playing Saturday, but the pride, joy, and happiness on their faces was something pretty cool to see,” said Coach Matthews.
“We’re almost there.”
“There” is the State Tournament. Standing in the way is a matchup against Kelso, the 4th place team from the Greater St Helens League. “That is a very tough league,” Matthews said. “We will have our hands full.”
But tonight and into this morning, the Highlanders can enjoy the win that took them somewhere they haven’t been in a long time.
The next step for Hazen is the Bi-District seeding game against Kelso. The winner of that game is the #3 Seed to State; loser is out. The game will be Saturday, November 5 at 1:00 PM at Sunset Chevrolet Stadium in Sumner.

Hazen Wins, Earns #1 Seed
Hazen Soccer Pop Quiz:
Hazen Soccer’s victory tonight was:
A) An early birthday present
B) A Gutty team performance
C) Joe and Lora helping at their best
D) History making
E) All of the above
Going into the game, things were looking a little bleak for the Highlanders. Senior Keeper and Captain Priscilla spent the afternoon in the nurse’s office sick. Junior Keeper Cameron Devereux didn’t dress for the game as she was not medically released from the mild concussion she suffered in Fife. Senior Defender Kathleen Lucier was out with dental issues. Sophomore Defender Gabby Brower was hobbling on a bad ankle. After going 9-0-3 and getting ranked 8th in state, Hazen had gone 0-1-2.
“We have black eyes, we’re hurt, and we’ve played a little below our best in the last few games. But, we had three things going for us if we won tonight; the #1 seed into the playoffs, going undefeated in league, and being the 3A Seamount Champions,” said Coach Ken Matthews. “We played people all over the place tonight. That wasn’t the game plan, but you do what you have to do.”
Early on, Highline – a team with no hope of reaching the playoffs – was the aggressor. “I know Priscilla was feeling awful. She came up with three early saves that, I don’t know - you just say that was our Priscilla,” said Matthews. The half ended 0-0.
At the half, Matthews told the players they were all around “it”. “It” was coming. And, “it” finally did. At the 60 minute mark, Junior Mid Dee Dee Green scored on an assist by Senior Forward and Captain Marina Vaughn. Ten minutes later, Green scored again on an assist by Sophomore Mid Chelsea Delgado. “The funny thing is, none of those players were playing in positions they started the game playing,” Matthews ended.
The answer to the pop quiz is E.
A) An early birthday present – Happy Friday Birthday Coach Vanden Bos
B) A Gutty team performance – See above
C) Joe and Lora at their best – they are looking over us
D) History making – first undefeated league record and #1 seed since at least 1992
E) Yup. All of the above
Varsiy Women of the Match - Priscilla Yu and Chelsea Delgado.
JV beat Highline 4-0 to end up their season with a another win. Dani Larson had a hat trick (3 goals). Brook Swenson scored. Assists were from Bridget Dougherty, Emma Lorrigan, and Kianne Littleton. Elise Fowler got a shutout in goal. Dani Larson was the Woman of the Match.
Next game is against the #1 seed from SPSL. It could be either Auburn Mountainview or Bonney Lake. The game will be at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood on Wednesday, November 2 at 7:30. Both teams in the game advance - the winners as the #1 seed and loser as the #2 seed into the bi-district games on Saturday, November 5.

Press Release – October 25, 2011 - Fife Downs Hazen
Hazen dropped a nonleague game to SPSL 2A league leaders Fife tonight 1-0. The loss gave Hazen a final 3-2-1 nonleague record for the season. It also marked the first time the Highlanders have been shut out October 28, 2010.
Hazen has less than 48 hours to recover. In what could be considered the biggest league game since 1992, the Highlanders face Highline on Thursday. “I like to look at the history, as best as I can tell, it was 1992 the last time we came out of league as the #1 Seed,” said Coach Ken Matthews.
Kennedy beat Highline tonight 5-1. A Hazen victory against the Pirates Thursday would result in a tie between Kennedy and Hazen in playoff points. “Originally, I thought we’d play Kennedy a fourth time in a tiebreaker game. I went back to review the tiebreaker rules and after asking, it was confirmed we own the tiebreaker by virtue of the Lindbergh win,” Matthews said.
“We honored our seniors the other night. I’d say they would give up the tiaras, pillow pups, and other stuff gladly if we were able to give them that #1 Seed,” Matthews concluded.
Sarah Schoville, Courtney Kiteley and Dee Dee Green were tonight’s Women of the Match.
Both Hazen Varsity and JV teams face off against Highline Thursday. JV is at 3:30. Varsity kicks off at 5:00. Both games are at Valley Ridge Park. Valley Ridge is located at 4644 S. 188th St in Seatac.

Press Release – October 18, 2011 - Hazen Ties Highline
Hazen salvaged a tie tonight against Highline. Scoring for the Highlanders were Tyra Markey and Brianne Sherin. Getting assists were Sarah Schoville and Dee Dee Green.
While the tie knocked Hazen out of the running for a league championship, because of a result a long car and ferry ride away, Hazen can still be the first seed into the sub-district playoffs. Bremerton, ranked #10 in state this week, lost to 2A Klahowya tonight 1-0.
“The way the playoff points go, a league loss really hurts your chances in the seeding position,” said Coach Ken Matthews. “Whenever I think we’re pretty much out of it, something like this gift happens.”
Maybe it isn’t a gift.
“After Joe’s (Joe Dahl, long time Hazen sports support and custodian) memorial service, I told the girls he’d be looking out for us this year. A week ago we lost another Hazen Soccer family member who has had been a big part of our program for several years; Lora Michaud,” Matthews commented. “When we played at White River last week, before the game there was a double rainbow – one of our players said that’s Joe and Lora watching over us.” Tonight, when Matthews texted the Bremerton result to Coach Bre Vanden Bos her comment was – Thanks Joe and Lora.
“We still have a chance to be the most successful girls’ soccer team since 1993. Maybe we have some magic in our pockets. The way we’ve played lately isn’t going to get us there, but we do have the talent to do what needs to be done,” Matthews concluded.
Courtney Kiteley was the Fair Play Award winner. Courtney and Gabby Brower were Co-Women of the Match.
Hazen’s JV team beat Highline 4-0. Brook Swenson scored two goals and had an assist. Taylor Jensen and Rachael Platin scored. Shannon Goss was Woman of the Match.
Both Hazen squads face off against Kennedy Thursday. JV is at Hazen Field at 5:30. Varsity kicks off at 7:30 at Renton Stadium. It is Senior Night.

Hazen Suffers First Loss
It took eight weeks and twelve games, but tonight Hazen Soccer lost a game. Eastside Catholic beat the Highlanders 2-1 is a physical game that looked a lot like the playoffs.
“We set several goals this year; one we didn’t was to go undefeated. Nobody likes a loss, but our focus has always been on getting the highest seed we can out of Seamount,” said Coach Ken Matthews. “We have three league games left and still have a chance to be the #1 seed.”
Tonight’s game may have helped prepared Hazen for those games. Coming off a big win against a good White River team, Hazen looked a step slow. Eastside took a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the game. “We weren’t clicking all that well. Eastside is a very good team. They took advantage,” added Matthews.
Hazen tied it up six minutes later when Junior Outside Mid Dee Dee Green found a running Senior Attacking Mid and Captain Sarah Schoville for the goal. The half ended 1-1.
Hazen pressed for the win in the second half. Eastside counterattacked and scored the winner with four minutes left in the game. “We’re always going to attack,” said Matthews. “Sometimes that bites you; tonight we paid the price.”
The Highlanders jump right back into the frying pan on Tuesday. Hazen Soccer plays league rival Highline. All three Seamount 3A teams, Hazen, Highline and Kennedy are still alive in the playoff hunt. Hazen plays Highline Tuesday, Kennedy Thursday, and Highline again on the 27th.
“We’re all playing each other now. Because of that, you can’t clinch a playoff slot early in the season,” said Matthews. “Now we need league wins and we need to get back on track Tuesday.”
Tuesday, the JV plays Highline JV at Hazen Field at 5:30. Varsity plays Highline at Renton Stadium at 7:30.

Hazen Beats Newport
Last year, Hazen and Newport played a tight, tense, physical game that Hazen lost in the last few minutes 1-0. Fast forward to this year and nothing in the way the game was played changed. But the outcome was completely different as Hazen edged the Knights 2-1.
Newport, a Kingco 4A school, presented the Highlanders with a look at a quick thinking and fast team. “By far, they play at a pace we haven’t seen this year,” said Coach Ken Matthews. “We’re not a slow team, but at times we looked like we were in slow motion.”
At twenty minutes, Hazen’s Junior Defender Tyra Markey passed a ball up the left side. Junior Outside Mid Dee Dee Green crossed the ball to Sophomore Brianne Sherin for a 1-0 lead.
One of the best known adages in soccer is that the riskiest two minutes in a game are right after a team scores a goal. Newport must have written that story as in less than a minute they tied the score up. The half ended 1-1.
Twenty minutes into the second half, Green scored off an assist by Sophomore Central Defender Courtney Kiteley. From that point on, Hazen relied on their defense to gain the win.
“Our backs and keepers were under pressure all night; give credit to Newport for that. But, our defense is pretty darn proud of their Goals Against Average (0.55) and they gave us the chances to win tonight,” said Matthews. “Luckily, we converted the chance we needed to get the win.”
Dee Dee Green was Woman of the Match.
JV lost to Newport. Co-Women of the Match were Shannon Goss and Dani Larson.
Next up for the Highlander Varsity is a road game against White River on Tuesday. Kickoff is at 7:00 and the field is on the high school campus.

Press Release – October 6, 2011 - For immediate release
Hazen and Kennedy Tie
Since 1999, Hazen hasn’t had much success against Kennedy Catholic. Prior to this season, Kennedy owned a 28-0-1 record versus the Highlanders. The Lancers dominated those twelve seasons with a 143-18 scoring margin. The one bright spot in that long record was last year when the Highlanders went 0-2-1 and were “only” outscored by seven goals.
Earlier this season Kennedy salvaged a goal late in the second half to draw Hazen 1-1. Tonight, Kennedy scored twice very late to salvage a 2-2 result. Scoring for Hazen were Sophomore Defender Gabby Brower and Senior Attacking Mid and Captain Sarah Schoville. Assisting on the goals were Senior Forward and Captain Marina Vaughn and Gabby Brower.
“I told someone after the first game, you’re never disappointed with a tie against a team like Kennedy. Think about it; eleven years of losing every game to these guys by an average score of 7 to 1 and now we haven’t lost to them this season,” said Coach Ken Matthews. “But every one of us, players and coaches, know where we should be after these two this year.”
The disappointment showed after the game. But it can’t last long. Kingco 4A Newport drives up Coal Creek Parkway for a little neighborhood match up on Saturday. “We have no time to feel sorry for ourselves,” said Matthews. “We need to get focused because last year, this was a heck of a game. In spite of feeling crummy right now, we’re still undefeated. I’d like to see us keep that stat alive Saturday.”
Tonight, Kendall Michaud was the Fair Play Award winner. Sara Schoville was Woman of the Match.
JV lost to Kennedy; Brook Swenson, Emma Lorrigan and Dani Larson scored; Paxtyn Scheppe was Woman of the Match.
On Saturday at Hazen Field, the Newport Knights visit for a non-league JV/Varsity soccer doubleheader. JV kicks off at 5:30 and Varsity and 7:30.

Press Release – October 4, 2011 - For immediate release
Hazen Tops Renton
Hazen rounded out the 2A portion of their league schedule tonight with a 4-0 win over Renton. The win gave the Highlanders a 5-0 record against the league’s “smaller” schools compared to Highline and Kennedy going 4-1.
“At the end of league play, I hope we look back at the Lindbergh win as huge for us,” said Coach Ken Matthews. “But we have a very tough road ahead of us before we can do that.”
While Hazen cruised, Renton played a gutsy game that had the Highlanders on their toes and working hard at times. The goals came from Sophomore Defender Gabby Brower, Senior Forward and Captain Marina Vaughn, Senior Attacking Mid Sarah Schoville and Junior Keeper (playing on the field) Cameron Devereux. Schoville had three assists and Junior Defender Tyra Markey had one assist. Sophomore Outside Mid Chelsea Delgado was the Fair Play Ward winner and Dani Schauer was Woman of the Match. JV lost tonight to Seattle Prep. Freshman Kianne Littleton was Woman of the Match.
“As a group, we all really like the Renton program. We like that they work hard and give everything they have when we play them. Andrea (Renton Coach Andrea Anderson) is always working on building a program. On the first day of tryouts we have 40+ girls; they have two. She’s a saint for what she does for RHS Soccer,” said Matthews.
Now, it gets much tougher. Hazen faces two challenges; 1) winning a league championship and 2) qualifying first in the 3A teams for the playoffs. “Both those challenges are there for us. We just have to do it. Step 1 is Thursday night against Kennedy Catholic,” Matthews said.
Since 1999, Hazen is 0-28-2 against the Lancers. The two ties were last year and earlier this season. Hazen led Kennedy 1-0 until the 60th minute of this year’s game.
“Kennedy Catholic has been just so darn dominating the last 10+ years that you have to play just the most perfect game to get a win. We almost did it, now we get the chance to prove we can,” Matthews said.
The game is Thursday at 7:30 – Renton Stadium. JV plays Kennedy at 5:30 at Hazen Field.

Hazen Bounces Tyee
Hazen Soccer produced a win tonight with a 5-0 win over Tyee. Hazen was matched up against another building and improving program. “John (John Yellam, former girls head coach and current Tyee AD) and I were talking before the game. He’s got a great new coach in Trisha Halverson (former Highline player) who understands the league and what it takes to make the playoffs in 2A. They’ve built off of John’s two years, have improved this year and have a great future.”
Hazen jumped out to a quick lead when Senior Forward and Captain Marina Vaughn crossed a ball to Junior Outside Mid Dee Dee Green for a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game. Sophomore Forward Brianne Sherin scored on another Vaughn assist three minutes later. “Marina is one of the unsung heroes on this team; she led the league in assists last year and I expect her to again this year,” said Matthews. “She just has a knack for getting that last pass into the right place.”
Seven minutes into the first half, Junior Defender Tyra Markey scored unassisted on a corner kick. At the 16 minute mark Sophomore Forward Korbyn Walls had an unassisted goal. Hazen cruised to a 4-0 half time lead.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Sophomore Central Mid Cindy Hanson scored on a Sherin assist for the final tally for the game.
In spite of all the scoring, Matthews is very proud of the defensive improvement. “I can’t say enough positive things about our defense. We’ve improved so much the last three years. Bre (Bre Vanden Bos, Hazen Assistant Coach) is a defensive genius. Under her guidance we’ve gone from a GAA (Goals Against Average) of 2.10 (2009) to 1.00 (2010) to 0.375 this year. I’d bet there aren’t too many teams with a 0.3anything that haven’t made the playoffs,” Matthews said.
Korbyn Walls was Women of the Match.
Next up for Hazen is a Derby Match against Renton on Tuesday. “Renton is one of the teams we love to play. They too are building a program and work very hard the entire game. It’ll be another good game for us to show what we are all about – respect, sportsmanship, and winning.” Matthews concluded.
Other results tonight:
Kennedy 1 Highline 0
Bremerton 2 Kingston 1
Fife 2 Lindbergh 1

Hazen Soccer Powers to 6-0 Win
Hazen took on an outmanned Foster team tonight and came out on top for a win. Hazen, a team that draws players from several top club teams, had the advantage from the start.
Senior Attacking Mid and Captain Sarah Schoville got the Highlanders on the board at 11 minutes off an assist from Junior Outside Mid Dee Dee Green. One minute later, Green scored an unassisted goal. At 14 minutes Senior Forward and Captain Marina Vaughn scored, assisted by Sophomore Outside Mid Chelsea Delgado. Michaud scored at 25 minutes assisted by Sophomore Korbyn Walls for the final score of the half.
The only scoring in the second half was a goal by Schoville assisted by Sophomore Outside Mid Kristina Holm.
“As we work through this part of the schedule, we have a chance to show what Hazen Soccer stands for,” said Coach Ken Matthews. “Some of these teams struggle to get enough players together. My hat’s off to their coaches for the work they do. I hope we can always be the team in our league that encourages teams that struggle by showing class and respect. We’ll get there – one of these days, we’d like to win a Sportsmanship Award.”
Sam Barber was the Just Play Fair award winner. Tyra Markey was Woman of the Match.
In other Seamount results, Lindbergh beat Kennedy 2-1. There is no report on the Highline v Tyee game tonight.

Highlanders Click in 3-0 Win
In a game that had the coaches smiling, Hazen Soccer took a giant step in the playoff point total by beating Highline tonight. “Bre (Hazen Assistant Coach Breann Vanden Bos) and I agreed after the game that the girls put on a pretty good show out there,” said Coach Ken Matthews. “You know you’re doing well when the three referees tell you after the game - you’ve got a very good team’.”
Hazen put it all together tonight. With good passing and running the Highlanders had several chances to take the lead early. At the 30 minute mark, Junior Mid Dee Dee Green scored an unassisted goal. Hazen led 1-0 at the half having outshot Highline 9 to 0.
At times this year, Hazen has been testing a second formation. This game was the first time the coaches decided to give it the full half. “We tried it late v Kennedy, but I messed up the communication. Thankfully the girls made me look good. But knowing Highline would come out of the half ready to go at us, we decided to go with the 4-3-3. It was a little rugged for the first few minutes then we settled in,” Matthews said. “The girls are figuring it out.”
In the second half, Sophomore Forward Brianne Sherin scored twice on assists from Senior Forward Marina Vaughn and Senior Attacking Mid Sarah Schoville to put the game out of reach.
Keeper Cameron Devereux got the shutout and was awarded the Fair Play Award. Sarah Schoville was Woman of the Match.
Hazen Soccer also beat Highline’s JV by a 3-0 margin. Brook Swenson scored twice, once on a goal assisted by Kianne Littleton and the second on a penalty kick. Also scoring for the Highlanders was Emma Lorrigan with the assist going to Paxtyn Scheppe. Taylor Jensen played emergency keeper, got the shutout and was named Woman of the Match.

Hazen Sneaks a Win
“I would have liked to have that conversation with Joe tomorrow morning,” said Hazen Coach Ken Matthews. Matthews was referring to long time Hazen custodian and avid Hazen supporter Joe Dahl. Dahl passed away this year; all Hazen activities are honoring him in many ways.
“No matter the result, Joe would seek me out and somehow make it all seem right,” Matthews said. “I know talking to all the other coaches, he did the same thing, but I know I felt special. He made our girls feel that way too. We all feel he’s watching out for us this year.”
Maybe Joe Dahl provided some help tonight. The Highlanders faced a tough Lindbergh team at Renton Stadium. Coming off an exciting game against Kennedy, Hazen Soccer was a step off all night. At the 60th minute mark, Hazen got off a shot on goal. “I said to Coach V (Hazen Assistant Coach Breann Vanden Bos), ‘finally’”.
Three minutes later, Hazen scored. Junior Tyra Markey made a run out of the defense and took a through pass from Sophomore Brianne Sherin to put the ball past the Lindbergh keeper.
“Our defense and midfield were sound all night. More than ever, they were the key to everything happening. But, we need everyone at every position to click for us to accomplish the things we want,” said Matthews. “This wasn’t pretty, for some reason Lindbergh never is. We’re better than we played tonight.”
Priscilla Yu and Cameron Devereux split the shutout. Sophomore Outside Mid Kristina Holm was the Fair Play Award winner.
Matthews and Vanden Bos selected Sophomore Defenders Gabby Brower and Courtney Kiteley as co-Women of the Match.
Hazen is off until next Thursday when JV and Varsity square off against Highline.

Kennedy Salvages a Tie
After 80 minutes of the first of three league contests this season, nobody could claim a win. In what ended up being a very good soccer game, both teams had their chances to win but had problems putting the ball into the net.
The Highlanders scored first at the three minute mark when Tyra Markey put a long ball into the top of the net. Brianne Sherin assisted on the goal. “I have no idea the last time Hazen was ahead of Kennedy in a game,” said Hazen Coach Ken Matthews. “I’ve gone back to 1998, and we haven’t beaten them. So I suspect it is at least that long.”
Hazen took the 1-0 lead into the second half. On a free kick at the sixty minute mark, Kennedy’s Mary Witkowski found the net. “We have this set piece deal – we’re all over the ball but that final clearance hasn’t come together just yet. We’ve given up three goals in three games and all have been on set pieces. We’d be undefeated and un-scored on; I’m getting grayer,” said Matthews.
Kennedy outshot Hazen seven to three. The Highlander defense of Senior Captain and Keeper Priscilla Yu, Juniors Tyra Markey and Sam Barber, and Sophomores Gabby Brower and Courtney Kiteley held off the Kennedy attack.
“This is one of the most balanced teams I’ve ever coached. It is difficult to single out one or two players who stand out in a game. Just like tonight, everyone plays to their best,” Matthews said. “But, Sarah (Woman of the Match Senior Captain and Midfielder Sarah Schoville) stood out tonight with her efforts offensively and defensively.”
Hazen’s JV squad lost. Freshmen Central Defender Shannon Goss was Woman of the Match.
Thursday at 6:00, Hazen’s Varsity plays a Derby Game against Lindbergh at Renton Stadium. JV is idle for the rest of the week.

First Win for Hazen
In their second game of the season, Hazen Soccer picked up a win against a visiting Aberdeen Bobcat squad. While the score was the same as last season’s match up in Aberdeen, the Bobcats have improved. “They’ve had changes but the biggest was getting Fidel (Sanchez, first year coach at Aberdeen) from Hoquiam,” said Hazen Coach Ken Matthews. “The guy is a great coach and he knows how to teach the girls the game.”
Matthews coached for four years in Grays Harbor and knows many of the coaches and players from the area. He knew the Highlanders were in for a game. Taking control early was a necessity. Sophomore Forward Brianne Sherin helped with that as she scored off a Sophomore Mid Melissa Carney pass at the six minute mark. Sherin added another goal, her third of the season, fifteen minutes into the half assisted by Sophomore Defender Gabby Brower. Fourteen minutes later Carney scored, assisted by Sophomore Mid Chelsea Delgado.
“Aberdeen High School is known for having teams that never stop. Their soccer teams are no exception; they just keep coming at you no matter the score,” Matthews said. “It can be a little irritating, because you think you’ve got them down and you don’t.”
Two minutes after Carney’s score, Aberdeen’s Jill Hardy scored to get the Highlanders attention refocused. Senior Forward and Captain Marina Vaughn scored right before the half on a Sherin assist for a 4-1 lead. On one of the hottest days of the year, both teams survived the second half. Neither could find the net but both came close hitting the goal posts.
Melissa Carney was awarded Woman of the Match. Matthews also cited his two Keepers Senior Captain Priscilla Yu and Junior Cameron Devereux for outstanding play.
“Aberdeen is where we were two years ago – a new coach with a new system. Fidel and I have similar game strategies. We got closer last year and we’re improving this year. I could see they were trying to get there. They will improve; I think they’ll have a good season this year,” Matthews finished.
After a 1-1 draw against Garfield on Wednesday, Hazen now stands at 1-0-1 for the season.
Hazen’s JV squad lost in spite of getting goals by Freshmen Forwards Emma Lorrigan and Brook Swenson. The goals were assisted by Swenson and Bridget Dougherty. Swenson and Dougherty earned co-Woman of the Match honors.
Next Tuesday at 4:00 and 6:00, the Hazen teams open Seamount League play against Kennedy at Starfire.

Hazen Soccer Kicks Off the 2011 Campaign
There are times when a tie seems like a win and then sometimes one feels like a loss. Tonight it was the former rather than the latter. For the second year in a row, Hazen Soccer scored a last minute goal to salvage a 1-1 draw against 4A Garfield. Garfield’s Bulldogs play in the 4A Kingco league – one that has produced several recent nationally ranked teams and 4A State Champions.
“They play a really rough schedule. I think we benefit from that because they are big, physical and well coached,” said Coach Ken Matthews. “Just like last year, they challenge you from every position – but their outside game is something else.”
Tasked with countering that outside challenge were Senior Kendall Michaud, and sophomores Chelsea Delgado and Kristina Holm – and they did well. “Those three are the type player you don’t like to play against. I guess the best word is pesky. If I played against those three, it would drive me to another description,” Matthews said.
Matthews has stacked the deck with defenders this year. Returning from last year are Senior Kathleen Lucier and Sophomores Gabby Brower and Courtney Kiteley. Add to that Juniors Sam Barber and Tyra Markey, and Matthews has five starters for three positions and some options. “We have a luxury in defense; Gabby and Tyra can be dangerous from anywhere on the field. With Courtney, Kathleen and Sam in there we don't lose anything which gives us flexibility when we need it”, Matthews commented.
Garfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 27th minute on a set piece play. Hazen was a little late to cover and paid the price. “We need to spend some time working on our set piece coverage,” Matthews said. At half time, the team discussed staying with the plan. The run of play was good, but slightly in the favor of Garfield.
Moving pieces around in the second half, time started to run out. “Déjà vu all over again,” said Matthews. Last year at Garfield, Hazen scored in the last minute to draw the Bulldogs. This year, Sophomore forward Brianne Sherin made the run and Junior defender Tyra Banks made the cross; Sherin put the ball in the back of the net in the 79th. Sherin was Women of the Match.
“I’ve seen that goal probably 10,000 times in my life. It’s the one everyone loves. But make no mistake about it, we needed it and the girls delivered,” said Matthews. “We’ve had to make some adjustments due to injuries. It wasn’t a work of art, but we made progress against a quality opponent.”
In the JV match, Freshmen Forward Emma Lorrigan scored two goals in a loss. Lorrigan, the Women of the Match, was assisted by Keeper Cameron Devereux and Freshman Taylor Jensen.
Hazen next takes on Aberdeen High School on Saturday at Hazen Field. JV kicks off at Noon and Varsity at 2:00.
