We do not anticipate having to make any player cuts in the 2011 girls’ soccer program. However, the varsity roster is selected based on tryouts for positions during the first week of two a day workouts. The tryout process begins on August 22, 2011 and ends with the varsity announcement August 26, 2011.
Varsity Tryout Process
There are four core factors we look for in a player. While other factors often play into the decision process, if a player doesn’t have this base, it will be very difficult to get on the varsity radar screen. In order, the cores:
· Work – Effort, attitude, team work, dependability, attendance, priority of Hazen Girls Soccer in their life
· Knowledge – Effective understanding and the ability to play our system
· Skills – Fundamental soccer skills
· Development – Players who show potential to be future starters and can contribute meaningful minutes in selected games during the current season
The coaches use the following rating scale during tryouts:
· 5 Excellent
· 4 Good
· 3 Above Average
· 2 Below Average
· 1 Minimal
· 0 Poor/Unobserved
We play variations of a 3-5-2 modeled on the play of several professional and many college teams. Our game is fast paced, built on quick, smart, and unselfish decisions with a heavy emphasis on movement and passing. At a practice, you will never do a dribbling drill. The players who grasp this best by position will be on varsity.
Two-a-days sessions are where the players are trying out to make the varsity team. If you are on the sideline sore or too tired to work because you aren’t in condition, it will be very hard to evaluate and rate you as a player. Also, if you don’t have your paperwork in and that delays you working out, the process gets harder for all parties.
At the start of the evening session on Friday, August 26, we will announce our Varsity Roster. The minimum roster would be 16 players: 1 keeper, 5 defenders, 6 mids, and 4 forwards. With that said, I doubt the roster will ever exceed 17 field players and 2 keepers until we are in the playoffs. Playoff rosters can be as large as 22 players.
