2010 - 2011
Looking Back and Forward - At the Same Time

What a year; from watching the January foggy, cold, and wet GRFC Winter Classic games to the Spring season games to April player meetings to attending summer club tournaments all over Washington to the two a day practices to the jamboree and throughout the season and playoffs – 2010 will be a year to remember.

Our on the field accomplishments were plenty:

·         Beating Mercer Island, the pre-season #2 in the state, 1-0 in the Jamboree
·         Tying current 3A State Champion Seattle Prep 0-0 in the Jamboree
·         Tying 3A State Quarterfinalist Kennedy and #2 in state 0-0
·         Tying 3A State Qualifier Eastside Catholic 2-2
·         Beating Evergreen League Co-champions Aberdeen 4-1
·         Tying 4A Garfield 1-1
·         Beating Lindbergh for the first time in about 20 years
·         Beating Highline twice for the first time in about 15 years
·         Junior Varsity improving from zero wins to nine with a 6-2-1 league record
·         11 players making all league
·         League Co-MVP

Considering where the team came from to where it is, in the past two seasons we’ve taken giant steps:

1999 to 2008                2009 to 2010

Total Seasons                                          10                                    2
Wins                                                         55                                   20
Losses                                                      77                                   12
Draws                                                       11                                    4
Playoff wins                                               0                                     1
Goals For                                                242                                138
Goals Against                                          356                                  57

Our off the field accomplishments were just as significant:

·          Our team GPA improved from 3.43 to 3.55 moving us up to the Outstanding Academic Achievement   classification
·         Our Big Sister Little Sister program made the transition for our incoming freshmen a much better experience than in the past
·         Our Booster Club just keeps getting better:
They pulled off the impossible – a jamboree that has never been done anywhere.  The jamboree was so popular we already have 28 schools from all parts of the state asking to come to the 2011 jamboree.  That includes six top four state finishers in three classifications.  They host and maintain our super much improved website.  They continue to produce and sell the best looking scarves around!!!  They get people into the stands at our games and put on great events.  But mostly, they work tirelessly to make Hazen Soccer a program where girls can play the game and have a positive experience.

On top of all that, we improved the quality of our opponents playing teams from the 4A and 3A Kingco leagues and the Evergreen league.  This led to being ranked 10th in the state by the Seattle Times for four weeks during the season.  When we weren’t ranked in the Top 10, we were included in the list of teams on the Times “Teams on the Radar” including the final poll.

Our JV team improved all year and after a slow start, only lost one of their last twelve games to go 9-5-2 with a 6-2-1 league record.  Every player on the team scored at least one goal.  JV’s schedule was just as hard playing teams from schools that made the state playoffs this year including Seattle Prep, Issaquah, Eastside Catholic, Overlake, and our old friend Kennedy.

Now that the calendar has changed from 2010 to 2011, we can start to look forward.  Many things will remain the same - Coach V and I will be back at it – going to the foggy, cold and wet winter tournaments and spring season games with our returning players, watching the 8th graders, discussing the positions, pushing academics, sportsmanship, and citizenship.  We’ll still be out there for the summer events, figuring out new conditioning drills, laughing, and having fun.

But, in 2011 realistically our expectations must to be sky high.  We have six all league players returning.  From our 2010 regular season varsity roster we have 12 players who have played significant minutes and made important contributions against every one of our opponents.  They also have playoff experience and know our playing systems.  We have several junior varsity players ready to move up to the next level.  I’m hearing we’ll have twelve to fifteen new players coming into the program.

No question about it, the 2011 Varsity Roster will have quality and depth at every position.  Competition for starting positions and playing time will be something to get used to as we move from an up-and-coming program to a team that is always ranked in the top 10 and is a true threat to “go all the way”.

We’re at the point in our growth where there aren’t many things we can do that are in the “first time in 20 years” category left for us to cross off the list. Two that come to mind are beating Kennedy and getting through the district to be one of those lucky 16 who play in the state tournament.  Get very comfortable with that word – Expectations.

Remember, we’re not rebuilding, we’re reloading.  And -

WHERE DOES YOUR NEXT STEP TAKE US?
